Material comparison: mass, cost, acoustic mass law
Galvanized steel has a density of approximately 7,850 kg/m3 compared with aluminum alloy at 2,700 kg/m3 - roughly 2.9 times heavier for the same sheet thickness. For a noise barrier panel the acoustic mass law predicts that heavier outer sheet material provides better sound insulation at mid and high frequencies. In practice Yukings compensates for the lower density of aluminum by specifying a slightly thicker outer sheet (typically 2.0 mm aluminum against 1.5 mm galvanized steel) to achieve an equivalent EN 1793 DL classification.
Corrosion resistance and ISO 12944
Galvanized steel relies on hot-dip galvanization (HDG) to provide a sacrificial zinc coating of typically 85-100 microns for corrosion protection. In accordance with ISO 12944 the service life of a hot-dip galvanized coating ranges from 15 years in an industrial C4 environment through 25-30 years in a C2 rural environment. Aluminum alloy naturally forms a self-healing oxide passivation layer that gives excellent corrosion resistance in rural and coastal environments. For aggressive C5-M marine-industrial environments Yukings provides a powder-coat over HDG for steel or an anodized or powder-coat finish for aluminum.
Structural implications for post spacing and foundation
Because aluminum is lighter than steel for an equivalent acoustic performance, the overall barrier mass per linear meter is lower with an aluminum panel system. This reduces foundation loads on bridge-parapet mounted noise barriers and on noise barriers installed on retaining walls. However the lower elastic modulus of aluminum (70 GPa vs 210 GPa for steel) means aluminum panels deflect more under wind load for a given section. For heavy highway and high-speed rail projects galvanized steel is generally preferred for its higher rigidity and proven fatigue performance.

Cost comparison and delivery lead time
As a general comparison, aluminum alloy noise barrier panels have a higher material cost per m2 of barrier face than equivalent galvanized steel panels, largely because of the higher raw material cost of aluminum and the thicker sheet required to achieve equivalent mass. However, the total installed cost difference between aluminum and galvanized steel is often modest because aluminum panels reduce foundation and installation costs through reduced dead load. Lead times are comparable at approximately 20 working days for standard panels and 40 working days for custom-engineered systems.
Recommendation matrix by project type
As a starting point for material selection: high-speed rail and heavy highway projects tend to prefer galvanized steel for proven fatigue performance and high rigidity. Bridge-parapet and elevated structure projects often prefer aluminum for reduced dead load. Residential and community projects often prefer aluminum or powder-coated galvanized steel for aesthetic flexibility. Industrial and coastal projects may require either material depending on specific corrosion class (ISO 12944) and project-specific requirements.
