Noise Barrier Project Checklist for Bidding and Construction

Based on 18+ years of experience delivering noise barrier & sound wall projects across 60+ countries, Yukings has distilled a practical checklist covering specification, tendering, manufacturing, installation and commissioning of noise barrier & sound wall projects.

Phase 1: specification and acoustic design

Before any noise barrier goes to tender the project team must deliver the following specification documents: a noise model report defining source levels, receiver locations and regulatory targets; the resulting barrier insertion loss requirement by barrier section; the panel depth and type (metal-louvred, concrete, transparent) selection by barrier section; the barrier height and setback geometry by section; structural design basis including wind load to EN 1991-1-4; and reference to applicable standards including EN 1793 for acoustic performance and EN 1794 for mechanical performance and durability. The acoustic specification should include both the target insertion loss and the minimum EN 1793 classification for each panel type to be used.

Phase 2: tendering and supplier evaluation

During tendering the project team should evaluate supplier proposals against five technical criteria. First, the acoustic test documentation: are EN 1793 test reports provided from an ILAC-accredited laboratory, are they less than 5 years old, and do the panels tested match the panels proposed? Second, the structural design: are post sections, foundation design, bracing and connection details provided and do they comply with EN 1991-1-4? Third, the corrosion protection: are hot-dip galvanization details, paint or powder-coat systems provided and do they match the project ISO 12944 corrosion class? Fourth, manufacturing capacity and lead time: does the supplier have sufficient manufacturing capacity to deliver the project within the required lead time? Fifth, installation capability: does the supplier provide turnkey installation or only supply and supervision?

Phase 3: manufacturing quality control

During manufacturing it is important to implement a quality control regime covering at minimum: incoming material inspection (raw material certificates for galvanized steel sheet, aluminum sheet, mineral wool, PC window material and H-post steel); dimensional inspection of manufactured panels (length, width, depth, flatness, fastener spacing); in-process acoustic verification for representative samples; hot-dip galvanization thickness inspection; powder-coat finish inspection where applicable; and containerisation and packing inspection for export shipments. Phase 4: installation and site supervision

Installation quality control on site includes: foundation concrete strength verification (cylinder test results); post alignment, verticality and spacing verification; panel installation sequencing and alignment; transparent window installation with correct gasket compression; top-cap and end treatment installation; earth bonding and electrical continuity verification if required; and a final barrier walk-through inspection before handover. Phase 5: commissioning, handover and in-situ measurement

Commissioning and handover documentation includes: an as-built drawing package showing barrier location, height, panel type distribution and structural details; all material certificates and test reports; the acoustic test reports referenced in the specification; installation inspection records; a maintenance manual with recommended inspection intervals and panel replacement procedures; and, for projects requiring it, an in-situ noise measurement campaign to verify the achieved insertion loss. The in-situ measurement is typically performed to EN 1793-2 using a reference sound source.
